5 Days Mt. Kenya Trekking:Chogoria Route
5 DAYS: SIRIMON-CHOGORIA
Tour Overview
This is the best route combination on Mt. Kenya that offers diversity of attractive scenes. Unless preferred, camping is not necessary as accommodation is available in mountain huts throughout the trip. Although the trip offers reasonably good chances of reaching the summit, those who may not manage the challenge can cross over via the easier summit circuit trail and join up with other hikers at the Minto’s Camp or consider adding on a day at Shipton camp to acclimatize better ahead of the summit.
The Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi/Nanyuki
Depart Nairobi in the morning at around 900hrs for Nanyuki arriving in time for lunch. The afternoon is spent in this area acclimatizing, walking along the equator line. Dinner and overnight in a budget hotel.
Day 2: Old Moses Camp
After breakfast, drive to Sirimon Park Gate. After check-in, start hiking through the Rain Forest for 9 km (5/6 hours) to Old Moses camp (3300m). Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 3: Old moses/Shipton Camp
Depart Old Moses Camp at 7:30 am via Mackinder's Valley to Shipton Camp (4200m). The distance takes 8 to 9 hrs and 15km. Dinner and overnight at Shipton Camp.
Day 4: Shimpton/Point Lenana/ Chogoria
Early morning departure (3:00 am) to the summit, a walk that takes 3 hrs to point Lenana (4985m) arriving at 6:30am. After sunrise, descend to Mintos Hut for full breakfast and continue down through the Gorges valley to Chogoria Bandas and campsite. Dinner and overnight at the Camp.
Day 5 : Chogoria/Nairobi
After breakfast, set on a morning journey to Chogoria village(32km). There is an option of a jeep you can pay directly, or you cost-share to transfer you as a group. Then after Chogoria the transport is provided back to Nairobi, arriving late in the afternoon.
